How to choose your target level for the LILATE test?
When you take the LILATE test, you choose the level you aim to reach during your evaluation.
This level represents your goal: the level you believe you can achieve on the day of your test.
The LILATE certification is officially recognized from B1 in all spoken languages,
and from A2 in French Sign Language (LSF).
If your level is lower, you will receive an official level statement (A1 or A2), but not a certification.
The target level is therefore used to express your objective and guide your progress.
If you take the LILATE test as an independent candidate
You choose your target level when booking your test.

You can:
- aim for B1, B2, C1 or C2
- select a lower level
- choose Other if you believe you are below B1
If you select Other, we will prioritize assigning an examiner who speaks your native language.
This helps make the conversation easier and ensures a smoother testing experience.
👉 Not reaching the target level is never considered a failure.
You will simply receive the level that matches your actual skills.
If you take the LILATE test after completing a training program
In this case, your training provider may set the target level when you enroll, as it is part of the learning objectives defined in the training plan.
Your progress may evolve throughout the training.
Motivation, personal practice, professional context and engagement all influence your improvement.
If you feel that your level has increased and you want to aim higher, contact your training provider.
They can update the target level. You will be notified automatically by email if any change is made.
How to check your target level at any time
Your target level is displayed clearly in your candidate space.
You can view it:
- during the booking process
- on your booking summary page
- just before your test, in your dashboard
Here is how it appears in your space:

This visibility allows you to be sure that the level selected by you or by your training provider matches your objective.
An essential point: the target level is the highest level you can obtain
Your final result can be equal to or lower than the target level, but never higher.
This is why it is important to select a level that reflects your goal.
Practical advice:
- choose the corresponding level if you are confident about your objective
- if you do not
